  • Assignment 2 (due Tuesday, May 17)

    Read Hartle Chaps 17, 18, 19.
    Do problems 18.7, 18.8, 18.11, 18.15, 18.16, 18.24, 18.27, 18.29;
    19.2, 19.10.

  • Assignment 1 (due Tuesday, May 3)

    Read Hartle Chaps 20 and 21 (except 21.5).
    Do problems 20.2, 20.4, 20.5, 20.9, 20.11, 20.14, 20.17, 20.26;
    21.5, 21.7, 21.12, 21.18.

Winter 2011

  • Assignment 6 (due Tuesday, March 8)

    Read Hartle Chap. 14-15.
    Do problems 14.6, 14.9; 15.5, 15.6, 15.11, 15.14, and 15.15
    The last one is optional for undergrads.


  • Assignment 5 (due Tuesday, Feb 22)

    Read Hartle Chap. 12.
    Do problems 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, 12.12, 12.13, 12.14, 12.15, 12.24.
    The last two problems are optional for undergrads.


  • Assignment 4 (due Tuesday, Feb 8)

    Read Hartle Chap. 9.
    Do problems 9.2, 9.5, 9.8, 9.9, 9.12, 9.17, 9.20.
    Problem 9.5 will be much more interesting if you use the Mathematica program provided on the book's website (click on "Useful Links").
    Do one of 9.13, 9.19, 9.22; this is optional for undergrads.


  • Assignment 3 (due Tuesday, Feb 1)

    Read Hartle Chap. 8.
    Do problems 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.6, 8.11.
    Optional for undergrads: explore further the motion of test particles and photons in the wormhole metric, eq. (7.39). You are free to do this in any way you want. Be creative!


  • Assignment 2 (due Tuesday, Jan 25)

    Read Hartle Chap. 6-7.
    Do problems 6.6, 6.14, 6.15, 7.2, 7.5, 7.9, and 7.17.
    Optional for undergrads: Read carefully Box 3.1 and do problem 7.3.
    Explain why "using incorrect reasoning gives the right answer" for this problem.


  • Assignment 1 (due Tuesday, Jan 18)

    Read Hartle Chap. 1-5.
    Do problems 4.9, 4.11, 4.17, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.6, 5.10, 5.19.
    Do one of 5.7 (uniform acceleration), 5.22 (relativistic rocket), or 5.23 (tachyons); this is optional for undergrads.
