Post-Starburst Galaxy
Morphology
Classification Project

(As you progress, be sure to document your process/results/questions in your ARJ.)

  1. I.Morphology Classification (see ~/work/projects/PSB/morph/visualMorph/README)

  2. a)  Week 1-2: Create initial classification

  3. i.     Create categories for the first 100 PSBs

  4. ii.    Classify 2nd 100 PSBs, expand categories as needed

  5. iii.   Classify 3rd 100 PSBs, expand categories as needed

  6. iv.   Reclassify first 100 PSBs with full, expanded categories

  7. v.    Meet with partner, see where you agree and disagree

  8. vi.   Negotiate a merged category system

  1. b) Meet with Dr. T, create final classification system

  1. c) Week 3-7: Apply final classification system to full sample of 2811 PSBs

  2. i.    If classifying 1 galaxy per minute, classification will take ~48 hours

                  (12 hours/week for 4 weeks)

II. Use resources listed here and any others to find 2 interesting articles about galaxy evolution and/or about post-starburst galaxies specifically. Write one paragraph summary of one article for next week’s journal club discussion.

(POSSIBLE STEPS TO PURSUE ONCE MORPHOLOGY CLASSIFICATION IS COMPLETE):

  1. II. Automated Spiral/Elliptical Classification using IDL program

  1. III. Spectral Classification: Binary AGNs

  2. a) Use IDL program (~/work/projects/PSB/binaryAGN/binaryAGN.pro) to look for double lines

  3. b) Look at X-ray images to check for indicators of dual AGNs
